Big Tech Platforms Shielded Scandal-Plagued Democrat candidate Graham Platner from Voters for months
Apple and Google News Allegedly Buried Over 100 Negative Stories on Maine Senate Candidate
Apple News and Google News kept voters in the dark about serious problems with Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner for months, according to a new study. The Media Research Center found that from November 2025 through May 2026, these platforms ran zero stories on key scandals surrounding Platner. This included reports about a Nazi-linked tattoo, offensive Reddit posts that were later deleted, antisemitic comments, and other red flags from his background.
Platner, an oyster farmer who positioned himself as an outsider against big corporations, won his primary. Yet major stories from outlets like Fox News and Breitbart never showed up in prominent feeds on Apple or Google platforms. Coverage only picked up after The New York Times reported on a sexting scandal in June. Platner stepped down on July 10 following an accusation from an ex-girlfriend, which he has denied. Maine Democrats are now rushing to find a replacement to face Sen. Susan Collins.
The study counted at least 112 negative stories that Apple and Google News failed to promote. MRC President David Bozell called it a "protection racket" for Platner's campaign. Google pushed back hard, saying the claims use a flawed method and are not true. Still, the pattern raises serious questions about how these tech giants decide what news millions of Americans see on their phones and devices.
Conservatives have long warned that Silicon Valley companies tilt the scales in elections. When big tech controls the news flow, it can hide damaging facts about one side while pushing others. This case shows how an outsider Democrat got a free pass until the scandals grew too big to ignore. Regular Americans deserve straight news, not curated results that protect certain politicians.
