China has secured a regulatory first in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. In March 2026, the National Medical Products Administration approved Neuracle Medical Technology’s NEO implant—the world’s first commercial invasive BCI—for patients with certain spinal cord injuries.

The coin-sized device rests on the brain’s protective dura mater rather than penetrating tissue. It reads neural signals wirelessly to help restore hand function, enabling users to control an assistive glove for grasping objects. The system targets adults aged 18–60 with partial paralysis from cervical spinal cord injuries who retain some upper arm movement. Developed with Tsinghua University, it has undergone clinical testing in dozens of patients and is now commercially available in China.

While the medical intent—to aid paralyzed individuals perhaps deserves recognition, this development highlights deeper issues with human-brain interfaces. Rapid commercialization in one market, supported by strong government backing, accelerates deployment but also compresses the time for thorough long-term safety evaluation. Risks such as infection, signal degradation, immune responses, and unforeseen neurological effects remain significant unknowns with any invasive implant.

As neurotechnology advances, questions persist about the wisdom of merging hardware with the human brain. Haven’t we been specifically told not to alter the human body and to keep ourselves as we were created? Those who are not of Christian faith may not believe so, yet the ethical and philosophical stakes of modifying our fundamental biology remain profound regardless of one’s worldview.
