Dozens of Tech Leaders Join Open-Source AI Coalition

A group of leading American tech companies just released a clear message to Washington. On July 24, 2026, firms including NVIDIA, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, IBM, and more than two dozen others signed the letter “Open Weights and American AI Leadership.”

The letter makes a strong case for open-weight AI models—ones that anyone can download, study, change, and run on their own systems. These models expand access so startups, factories, hospitals, and small businesses can use advanced AI without paying top prices or starting from zero. That spreads opportunity across the country instead of locking it up in a few big hands.

It also boosts real competition. When many players can build and improve on the same foundation, costs drop, innovation speeds up, and benefits reach more Americans. Customers keep control of their data and the value they create. That supports American independence rather than dependence on a handful of providers.

The signers admit open models carry risks, but they argue shutting them down is the wrong fix. Closed systems can still get breached or fail without anyone outside noticing. Open weights let more researchers find problems, build defenses, and improve safety—just like open-source software did for the internet and critical systems decades ago.

Policymakers should expand compute access for innovators, invest in shared tools and data, and avoid early bans that would kill competition or push talent and development overseas. Legitimate techniques like distillation should not be banned under broad rules meant to stop actual theft.

This approach matches core American strengths: free enterprise, competition, and technological leadership. Heavy restrictions risk handing the future to rivals abroad. Supporting open weights helps keep the U.S. ahead while spreading prosperity at home.
