GitHub Goes Dark Again: Another Reminder That Big Tech Can't Be Trusted With the Tools America Runs On

Microsoft's code platform crashed worldwide Monday, leaving developers stuck and raising hard questions about putting all our eggs in one corporate basket.

GitHub, the Microsoft-owned site where millions of programmers store and share code, went down in a serious outage on Monday, August 17, 2026. Starting around 9:40 a.m. Eastern time, users across the country and the world hit error rates of about 20 percent on the website and API. Downloads of repositories failed half the time. Pull requests, Actions for automated builds, authentication, webhooks, issues, and even the AI coding tool Copilot all struggled or stopped working.

GitHub confirmed the problems early and said it was investigating. By late afternoon it had found a bad component and started fixes. The bulk of the outage lasted several hours and was mostly cleared by evening, though some services lagged. Downdetector saw nearly 3,000 reports at the peak. No full root-cause report has come out yet.

This was not a "one off" event. GitHub has seen a string of outages in recent months and years. Developers depend on it for open-source projects, company code, and daily work. When it fails, builds stop, deployments stall, and teams sit idle. On X Tuesday, people were still posting about the mess—joking about forced breaks, complaining about the reliability, and looking for ways out.

The bigger problem is clear: too much of America's software infrastructure sits inside one big tech company. Microsoft bought GitHub years ago. Since then, outages have become more common while the platform carries more load from AI tools and bots. Putting critical tools in the hands of a single giant corporation creates single points of failure. When that company stumbles, real work grinds to a halt.

Developers are already talking about alternatives to what some now call legacy GitHub. Options include GitLab for full DevOps features, Codeberg and Forgejo for more open and independent hosting, Gitea for lightweight self-hosting, and newer platforms like Cursor's Origin that launched around the same time as the outage. Some teams are moving projects or setting up mirrors so one outage does not stop everything. Self-hosting or spreading code across multiple services reduces the risk of depending on any one corporate gatekeeper.

Reliable tools matter for jobs, innovation, and national competitiveness. Big tech has shown again that it prioritizes scale and features over steady uptime. Monday's crash is another reason for developers and companies to stop treating GitHub as the only option and start building redundancy. The code that powers businesses and open-source work should not live or die with one Microsoft-owned platform.
