On July 2, 2026, Europe's highest court upheld a €4.1 billion ($4.67 billion) fine against Google. The ruling ends years of appeals over how Google handled its Android operating system. Judges found that Google abused its strong market position by forcing phone makers to pre-install Google Search, Chrome, and the Play Store. These deals also limited rival apps and systems.

Google has said Android is open and gives people more choices, including lower-cost phones. But the court ruled that the agreements helped lock in Google's control over mobile search and apps. With Android powering most smartphones worldwide, these moves hurt competition and limited options for users and developers.

Many who watch Big Tech closely have pointed out these issues for years. Dominant companies can shape entire markets in ways that favor themselves and make it hard for others to compete. This case shows how pre-install rules and restrictions can tilt the playing field.

While Americans often disagree with Europe's heavy-handed rules on technology, this may be one case where the concerns line up. Google's long-standing practices with Android appear to have crossed into real anti-competitive behavior that deserves a closer look on both sides of the Atlantic. The decision could push for more accountability in how tech giants manage the tools millions rely on every day.
