Proton’s Big Outage: What Happened and Why It Mattered

On Wednesday evening, August 26, 2026, Proton users around the world suddenly lost access to their accounts. Email would not load. The VPN would not connect. Calendar, Drive, Pass, and other Proton tools went dark too. Reports started hitting Downdetector around 5:57 p.m. Eastern time. Within minutes, people on X were posting screenshots of login errors and “servers unreachable” messages.

At first Proton’s status page still showed green. That mismatch frustrated users who could not get in on the web or in the apps. About half an hour later, Proton Support confirmed a major outage and pointed people to status.proton.me for updates.

The company later said the cause was a critical cooling failure at its Frankfurt data center. Servers overheated, so Proton began shifting traffic to backup sites. The outage hit nearly the full product lineup: Mail (web, apps, Bridge, and notifications), VPN, Calendar, Drive, Pass, Wallet, SimpleLogin, and Lumo.

Recovery started later that night. By about 8:45 p.m. Eastern, Proton said services were largely back online. Some users still saw delays in sending or receiving mail and in getting notifications. The company stressed that no data was lost. A fuller post-mortem is expected on the status page after cleanup work finishes.

For a privacy-focused company that markets reliability, a multi-hour global outage is a reminder that even well-run services can fail when hardware in one location goes wrong. Users who depend on Proton for work email or secure connections felt the impact immediately. The good news is the company moved traffic, restored access, and publicly said mail was only delayed, not deleted.
