Silicon Valley’s News Apps Stack the Deck with Political Bias: 68% Left, 5% Right
Apple, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo push left-leaning stories by the thousands while conservative outlets barely get a look as midterms near
Four of the biggest news apps in the country, Apple News, Google News, Microsoft’s MSN and Yahoo News, are not handing voters a balanced picture. A Media Research Center review of morning feeds from Nov. 1, 2025, through Sept. 6, 2026, found those apps promoted 14,350 articles from left-leaning outlets out of 21,099 stories from rated sources. That is 68 percent from the left. Right-leaning outlets got 1,154 stories, or 5 percent.
Apple News was the most lopsided. It ran 4,133 left-leaning articles and only 65 from the right—about 1 percent. Google News was close behind: 3,667 left-leaning stories (68 percent) and 185 from the right (3 percent). Yahoo News gave the left 77 percent of its rated stories. MSN was the least tilted of the four, yet still favored left-leaning sources 53 percent of the time while giving the right 12 percent.
These apps reach hundreds of millions of views each month. Three of them come preloaded on phones and computers. Pew Research found 57 percent of American adults have low confidence that journalists act in the public’s interest. When most people get news from digital sources, the choices made by a handful of tech companies matter.
The pattern shows up in what gets buried. Stories on alleged fraud and ethics problems involving Democrats, criticism of Anthony Fauci after government records surfaced, and certain Senate candidates received little play. Coverage of Republican primaries often came from left-leaning outlets and framed Trump-backed wins as setbacks. Headlines on immigration, the WNBA transgender debate, and even America’s 250th anniversary leaned negative or partisan. Popular right-leaning sites such as Newsmax, Daily Mail, Breitbart and The Gateway Pundit barely appeared. Fox News was the main conservative source that made the cut.
AllSides ratings, used by the researchers, place most of the heavily promoted outlets on the left or lean-left. Separate AllSides reviews of Apple News and Google News have found the same tilt: far more left-rated sources than right-rated ones. New York Post reporting on earlier MRC snapshots found 80 percent of GOP primary stories on these apps came from left-leaning media.
Tech companies insist their algorithms are neutral. The numbers say otherwise. When the same platforms that sit on nearly every phone systematically favor one side of the press, voters get a filtered version of events. That is not a free and open debate. It is a handful of coastal companies deciding which stories millions of Americans see first.
