Cursor works like a smart pair programmer. It helps software engineers write code faster by suggesting changes, fixing bugs, and handling big parts of projects. Many big companies already use it — reports say about 64% of Fortune 500 firms rely on tools like this. Cursor has grown quickly, hitting around $1 billion in yearly revenue by late 2025.
The deal builds on a partnership from April. Back then, SpaceX (through its xAI group) started working with Cursor to train better AI models using the massive Colossus supercomputer in Memphis. That machine has over a million advanced GPUs. The two companies have been jointly building a new model that will soon show up in Cursor and Grok tools.
Why This Matters
SpaceX wants to create the “world’s most useful AI models.” Buying Cursor gives them a ready-made product used by millions of developers every day. It also adds strong distribution inside big companies. This move helps SpaceX compete in the fast-growing AI tools market against players like Anthropic and others.
The purchase is all in SpaceX stock, which means no big cash outlay right now. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. Cursor will stay as its own unit under SpaceX.
For everyday tech users and engineers, this could mean better coding help coming soon. SpaceX says upgrades are on the way, powered by their huge computing resources.
