Virginia AG Delivers Major Setback to Meta in Fight Over Harm to Kids
Court Clears Path for Trial on Addictive Social Media Designs

A federal court has rejected Meta's attempt to shut down a major lawsuit, handing a win to Virginia's Attorney General and a group of states. The case accuses the company behind Facebook and Instagram of building platforms that hook young users and hide the damage they cause. Trial is set for August in California.
Big Tech has spent years pushing addictive features like endless scrolling and constant notifications to keep kids glued to their screens. States say Meta knew about the mental health risks but kept telling parents the apps were safe. The ruling means claims under the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and state consumer protection laws will move forward. Judges found Meta likely failed to get proper parental consent for children under 13.
Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones said the decision shows Meta is not above the law. He pointed out how the company puts profits ahead of children's well-being. This case is part of a larger effort by nearly 30 states to hold Meta accountable for designs that maximize time spent on the platforms, often at the expense of young users' health.
Conservatives have warned for years about Silicon Valley's power and its effects on families. These platforms rake in billions while parents struggle with rising anxiety, depression, and other problems linked to heavy use among teens. Earlier jury verdicts against Meta and Google in similar cases have already shown juries are willing to find these companies responsible.
Meta's deep pockets and teams of lawyers have let it dodge full responsibility for too long. This upcoming trial could force real changes, such as better age checks, limits on harmful features, and more honesty with users. It is a reminder that even the biggest tech giants must answer for the products they push on American families.
